Snail

I knew the pests would eventually start to raid my garden and I found the first snail the other day as shown in this dramatic re-enactment.

  1. Gday Graham,
Trev told me about your blog site. We are also setting up a vege garden with similar beds you have used.
Can you give me some tips on what to fill them with please ?
ie what stuff to chuck in to make stuff grow good.
    Cheers,
    Andrew.

  2. Hi Andrew, there's a couple of ways to fill the beds. You could try the No-Dig method which is essentially alternating layers of straw and manure with some other goodies thrown in. If you look at the Posts About "No-Dig" they describe how I did it. This is an excellent way to go for most veggies except root crops.

The other way is the more traditional soil with plenty of manure and blood and bone dug in. I alway mix some Sulphate of Potash with the blood and bone at a rate of 1 part potash to 10 parts B&B. This makes it a more complete fertilizer. With both methods you'll need to throw in some dolomite lime to raise the PH. Even though I've used some chook poo in my beds I have always liked sheep or sheep cow blend because it gives a better structure to the end result.

There's a place called The Greenlife Soil Company in Midvale that's a good place for blood and bone, rock dust etc.. They also have soils. Don't buy you're manure from Bunnings, it's too pricey. Either Google or get the Sunday Times and find someone who will deliver 100 litre bags of the stuff. There's a guy who runs Top Gun Garden Supplies that I got mine from but he's hard to get hold of. Try 0417 916 740.

That's about it I think. Let me know if you want anything else. Cheers.

  3. Thats awesome ! Thanks for the info Graham.
We have 2 big garden beds , so I might try one of each ie - the no-dig and the normal soil type.
    Cheers,
    Andrew.
